School Board Expands Full-Day Kindergarten & Improves Class Sizes
On unanimous votes, the Lawrence Board of Education agreed to spend at-risk funds to expand full-day kindergarten to the four remaining schools: Deerfield, Langston Hughes, Quail Run and Sunset Hill, for the 2012-13 school year, and approved hiring additional teachers to improve the base staffing ratio at the elementary and middle school levels next year. Both moves are an effort to raise the achievement of all students and meet board excellence and equity goals. At the elementary level, school staffs and site councils have weighed in on their priorities in an attempt to develop an accepted standard for programming and services for grades K-5. Smaller class sizes were among their top priorities. In addition, schools with half-day kindergarten programs emphasized their desire for full-day programs, while schools currently offering full-day kindergarten stressed that they would not want to lose those programs as a result of budget cuts. Chief operations officer Kyle Hayden told the board that projected enrollment increases coupled with an improved base staffing ratio will result in the district hiring up to 21.1 FTE instructional staff at an estimated cost of $1,148,117. The full-day kindergarten expansion is estimated to cost $527,341, the majority of which is at-risk funds to pay for 8.0 additional teacher FTE. Superintendent Rick Doll told board members that the administration supports both moves, but remains cautious about spending decisions. "We can't sustain this without additional dollars from the legislature," Doll said.

From Site Council
The final Quail Run Site Council meeting for the school year was held on Monday, May 7 and we are happy to report that several parents were present to give input on the discussion.  In conjunction with Lawrence Public Schools' focus on Equity, Excellence, and Engagement, the Quail Run Site Council read through parts of the book Courageous Conversations about Race, by Glen Singleton.  The 2011-2012 Quail Run Site Council goals were:

a.  to study the process of thinking differently about practices and policies through a book study on Courageous Conversations.
b.  to examine the policies and practices at Quail Run Elementary through the lens of equity and diversity.

We look forward to continuing this important work next school year and welcome parental participation! If you would like additional information regarding this important work, please visit the District Web Site at:
